We finished our move from the old office building to the new. I’ve traded a ten minute walk for a 10 minute drive or 30 minute commute by train. I’ve also traded a dull gray box for a small but bright windowed office. I think I’ve come out ahead.

I’ve spent a few days in it so far and I think the change is a significant improvement. Sure it’s tiny, and sure I have no shelving (which we will get fixed), but it’s bright, filled with natural light. I’ve been working with the overhead lights off. The view is the highway rather than the mountains, but I suppose you can’t have everything. And this building doesn’t seem to have any great mountain views from our floor.

I brought in my wind turbines and meteorological instruments and set them up on the windowsill. I have one more turbine to bring in, and I’m considering the Lego set as well. And I need to sort out some art and decorations. And maybe a plant.

On the commute, it’s a short 10 minute drive, slightly shorter in fact than the one to our old office which was in the same neighborhood. But I’ve lost the short 10 minute walk. But if I take the train, which is paid for as part of the package, then I take a 15-20 minute walk to the nearest station, a 5 minute train ride, and a 5 minute trip from the station up to my office. I don’t directly consider the walk to the station a commute, per se, since I’d set aside the same amount of time to walk a couple miles if I didn’t go to the office, and I like the idea of not driving if I can.
It’s only been a few days though. We’ll see how it goes long term.
