Friends, Photos, the Wall

Victoria is in town for a few days again for work. I really like it when she comes back and wish she did more often, even if that makes me selfish. We hit up 75th St. last night for some good food and good beer. I love that place.

Over the past few days I have sent a few postcards out in the mail. They are black & white 4×6 prints made on this neat Ilford paper that has postcard markings on the back. A few lucky (I hope they feel lucky, at least) should be getting photos I made in my closet darkroom soon. I like sharing pictures with people and this is a new way that I may find interesting for at least a few more weeks.

I was at Wal-Mart the other day, and besides the fact that I don’t really like that store, they had some very simple photo frames that are a pressboard back, glass front, and four little spring steel clips to hold front to back. They are only $2 and work fairly well. An 8×10 print from my darkroom fits perfectly, so I might go back and get a bunch more and litter prints all over the walls. I can change them out in a few minutes, too, so I could just print and change the photos from time to time if I had to.

Sure, it’s not terribly classy, but they look nice.

It’s Not Hot?

In true midwest fashion, after yesterday’s above-100 F temperatures, the afternoon high today was about 75 degrees. If you look at the temperature graph, it was about 90 at midnight, 80 at 7 am, and 65 at 8 am. 15 degrees in an hour, with a huge barometric pressure change and wind direction funkyness.

I’ll take it. We were due some relief. Funny thing is now I think the Seattle area is suffering with projected highs in the 90s for the next few days. My understanding is that most people out there don’t have air conditioning, so while 90 is nothing here in KC it’s probably just godawful for our PNW friends.

It’s Hot

Not to state the obvious or anything, but the past week or so has been awful. According to the power company, temps over the last 5 days have been: 104, 96, 100, 99, and 95. Let’s not even talk about the heat index. I’ve been spending most of my time indoors.

Full Time Fun?

I hear this in an ad on the radio for some KC radio company a lot: “Earn part time money having full time fun!” More work for less money sounds like a blast.

My Bedroom

Update: I added a picture of the second bedroom at the bottom. I told you that bed was ugly.

It’s cleaning day, so now that I have 2/3 of the apartment clean (the living room needs some major help) I decided to post a few pictures of my bedroom. This is what it actually looks like when the bed is made and the clothes are off of the floor. I was inspired by Sam Miller’s pictures of Sam Wong’s bedroom. I may post some pictures of the second bedroom/office too, though they will show how ugly and tiny my old bed is.

Ames Stuff

I’m in Ames right now, back for a few days during this 4th of July holiday. Stuff changes while you’re away from a place, for sure. There’s a Cold Stone creamery down by the Best Buy now, and I don’t remember it being there last time I was here. The new middle school looks finished, and way cooler than the old one. The area west of South Dakota on Mortensen is even uglier than I remember (how many apartment buildings can they build before the market is completely screwed?).

Most of the town is just as I remember it though. Yay Ames. There was more traffic than I’m used to becuase the Special Olympics is in town. I hear that the ISU paper got in a little bit of trouble when they printed an “Ames for Dummies” guide in their special edition for the Special Olympics. I’m pretty sure they were just working from the whole “for Dummies” series sort of thing with that, but when you have a huge gathering of disabled etc people coming to town it’s just a bit in poor taste.

Tonight I plan to get together with Derek and David, since it’s been quite a while since we’ve done so. Tomorrow supposedly is the grilling of food and drinking of beer at Brookside park, but knowing my friends we’ll screw it up somehow. We’re good at that.

Oh, I drove through the Ledges today. It was quite crowded. I drove very slowly through three of the four little streams, but on one of them there were a couple boys clearly motioning me to splash them. So I did. Vroom, and water above the top of my car. Yeah.
