But don’t worry, it wasn’t a computer. Dell was having some crazy insane deal on their 20″ widescreen LCD display. This is the display that uses the same LCD panel as the Apple 20″ display (though supposedly Dell gets the ones Apple rejects). Apple’s screen only supports digital connections, and my powerbook only has VGA out, so I couldn’t have bought the Apple display if I wanted to. Dell’s screen does support VGA besides DVI and was way cheaper anyways, so I ordered one and it arrived today.
Now of course I couldn’t find my VGA dongle, so I had to go have an adventure. One drive to the plaza later and I came home with the right adapter and a new white Apple keyboard (I can try to be loyal, at least). Now I can use my laptop, which I bought for its mobility, as a full fledged desktop. Is this irony? I’m not sure.
Since Apple is so awesome, all I had to do was plug in the monitor and hook it up to the computer. I turned off mirroring (one button, awesome) and set the resolution to the native 1680×1050. That was it. When I hooked the screen up to my PC earlier I had to go update drivers and other BS to get it to display native res.
As far as image quality goes, this thing blows my PowerBook’s built in screen right out of the water. It’s brighter and has higher contrast and richer colors. It also gives me enough room to stretch out. Photoshop is a whole new experience, and scanning is more pleasant as well.
