Security

I just read this SecurityFocus article. It is quite interesting, especially this bit about macs:

bq.. “Dave had some surprises up his sleeve as well. You’ll remember that I said he was using a ThinkPad (running Windows!). I asked him about that, and he told us that many of the computer security folks back at FBI HQ use Macs running OS X, since those machines can do just about anything: run software for Mac, Unix, or Windows, using either a GUI or the command line. And they’re secure out of the box. In the field, however, they don’t have as much money to spend, so they have to stretch their dollars by buying WinTel-based hardware. Are you listening, Apple? The FBI wants to buy your stuff. Talk to them!

“Dave also had a great quotation for us: “If you’re a bad guy and you want to frustrate law enforcement, use a Mac.” Basically, police and government agencies know what to do with seized Windows machines. They can recover whatever information they want, with tools that they’ve used countless times. The same holds true, but to a lesser degree, for Unix-based machines. But Macs evidently stymie most law enforcement personnel. They just don’t know how to recover data on them. So what do they do? By and large, law enforcement personnel in American end up sending impounded Macs needing data recovery to the acknowledged North American Mac experts: the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Evidently the Mounties have built up a knowledge and technique for Mac forensics that is second to none.”

p. Have I mentioned that I like my Powerbook?

Electron Microscope, Anyone?

The ISU Surplus sale apparently has two electron microscopes for sale. Its too bad that no one seems to want to buy them off of Ebay though. I can’t even find a fair price for either of the models they have. I guess I won’t be taking a gamble hoping to make a decent profit.

Home, Safe

We made it back safe and sound. With Andy driving it only took about 3:15, too. Although we woke up to a layer of ice this morning, the roads were clean and dry almost all the way until we got to Ames, where it was snowing just a bit.

Thanks, Alex and Victoria, for another wonderful time, and for putting up with all of us. Also thanks to Bryan for driving around town.

My need for human contact has been satisfied for a little while, now. I should be ok for a few more days.

KC Yay!

After the horrible stressful day today was, things are good and I am in Kansas City. Dr. Pate can totally take care of the rest of his presentation stuff on his own. Its time to take a well earned break.

KC Tonight

We Beat Iowa

Although it looked bad quite a few times, we did beat Iowa by a nice margin tonight. Big cheers go out to the Little Guy, John Neal, who really brought ISU back into the game with his two three pointers and a big steal, not to mention taking a charge from the Rapist.

ISU wins 84 to 76.

Guys like Kucinich had little or no showing.

Three Day

I could go for more three day weekends.

Much pressure up for next week; wish me luck.

Car is Back

$180 and the funny noise is gone. I hope this takes care of the problem for good.

Car Troubles

As most of my friends know, the Taurus isn’t starting right now. As far as I can tell there just isn’t enough juice in the battery to turn the engine over, and that the engine itself is fine. Since the battery is less than a month old my guess is that the alternator isn’t working correctly. I’m taking the car in to Ron’s Auto tomorrow morning, and hopefully they will quickly and correctly diagnose the problem and repair the car.

This will be the first real work that I have had done on the Taurus since I bought it 2 and a half years ago. It has been a real workhorse for me in that time. I’m a little sad that I have to fix it now.

Thanks to Sam for loaning me the Mazda for a few days. At least I’ll be able to drive until my car is fixed.
